WHAT IS IYENGAR YOGA?
Iyengar Yoga is a pure and traditional style of Hatha Yoga as developed by BKS Iyengar of Pune, India. Yoga became popular in the West mainly through his teaching and his method is now the most widely practised in the world.
With its main emphasis on detail, precision and alignment, together with the use of appropriate supports (props such as blocks, belts and blankets), Iyengar Yoga tailors the practice safely to the individual’s ability.
The teaching is progressive, building a stable foundation before introducing more demanding postures. During a class students are led through a structured sequence of postures which may include standing postures, sitting postures, twists, forward bends, backbends, inverted postures and restorative postures as well as breath control (pranayama).
